I need front wheel drive but looking for full size sedan. Love Lincoln town car but not in Minneapolis. I really like the 2005 Cadillac Deville and the newer version 2006-2009 dts. Any thoughts? Is the v8 North Star reliable? Any issues I should be aware of? Any other suggestions? I like the Avalon but it's a bit blah. Cadillac has more style. Love bench seat. Old school digital display. I also really like Lincoln mks with awd but that's in the 20's. Thoughts?

My grandad has a 2011 DTS Platinum. It's a great car, and the Northstar V8 has a reputation for reliability.

I don't see anything wrong with the DTS. Newer NorthStars are supposed to be pretty reliable. The interior looks nice and comfortable.

Maybe look at a Buick Lucerne as well.

But why FWD V8?

There's always the last generation Impala. Early years had an SS with the 5.3l V8, or the later versions had the Camaro's 3.6 with basically the same power.

They should be pretty cheap. And not altogether too terrible of cars.

I don't care about the v8. I want/need the space. I have two little kids that kick the heck out of my backseat and it hurts. Want to have more seperation.

Did you mean all wheel drive? Because FWD is still only two wheels spinning.

not many options in full size sedan with awd. Front wheel would be best in snow over rear wheel drive.

I think any after like 2001 are considered pretty bulletproof.

not many awd options in this class. Not inexpensive anyways. Front is better than rear in snow.

Probably nothing wrong with the DTS, but if you're really lucky, you can find an Impala SS with an LS V8 and front bench seat :)

And of course, all the RWD panther needs is snow tires.

Yuo can get an Audi or Subaru with AWD. And rwd works fine in snow if you know how to drive it and use proper snow tires.

my brother in law has a town car here. He hasn't tried snow tires but hAs had a heck of a time in the snow. Would it really make that much difference? It still wouldn't be as good as front wheel drive or awd?

Neither have full size sedan proportions. Not even the a8 is same size.

I've never worked on a Cadillac that didn't leak out of its Northstar....

My grandmother had a 2004 Cadillac Deville for almost ten years. She bought it in the spring of 2005 and just traded it in on a 2012 SRX last month.

The only problems she ever had all happened in 2013, when the car was nine-years-old. The tire pressure monitoring system quit, so the "Service Tire Monitor" message was always on. Then the a/c started making a thump-thump-thump noise when turned on. Something to do with the blower motor itself, I think. Other than that, literally NO issues. Ever. It was a rock solid car and almost all of its issues were just age related.

RWD with snow tires is better than any AWD with all seasons. Snow tires make an IMMENSE difference. Ask me how I know

that's an SRT8 btw.

What are your thoughts on Buicks? I owned a 2001 Century through many rough Chicago winters and never had an issuing barreling through the white stuff. I never even had to shovel out my parking spot much. FWD 3.1, 3.4, or 3.8 (supercharged) V6 and probably a lot cheaper than a Caddy. Those engines are dead reliable too- just make sure its had the intake manifold gasket replaced.

Why not go with an Escalade or similar GMT platform?

The Deville and DTS are both nice cars, but it sounds like you could use AWD.

I'm not even trying to be funny this has the most legroom of anything I've ever sat in that was not a limo or a dodge ram megacab.

the kids won't be kicking the front seat in this.

With snow tires on my Crossfire (as ridiculous as that is) I outdid my cousin's all seasoned AWD Ford Freestyle almost completely.

You can get an AWD 5 Series. I believe it also has a 50/50 weight distribution, which helps traction.

It makes a HUGE difference. I drove my Mustang around upstate New York all winter long with four good snow tires, never even a hint of a problem. My FWD company van, on the other hand, slid around all over the place, mainly because I never bothered to put in a request for snow tires.

Actually, I've never owned anything other than RWD and the only times I've ever had any issues at all in the snow are when I waited too long to change the tires.

RWD with snow tires is better than FWD with all season tires, no question.

I'm 6 feet tall and I can ride in the back of my buddy's A8 and not reach the front seat unless I lean over. There's practically enough room for a whole other row of seats back there. Not sure how much bigger you can want...sure a Town Car or Deville might be a bit longer but they have less interior space I can tell you that much. A DTS is tiny in the back and so is anything on the Panther platform. Trust me...I've been on two 1600 mile round-trip road trips in the back of a DTS. And they are not very nice either.

First gen MOPAR LX platform have AWD 30-70 ratio. I heard they do pretty well in the snow. There was a guy on LXforums was selling a pretty nice AWD magnum a few years ago. Before I bought my SRT I talked to him a bit about it. He live in CO if I recall, and the cars nickname was ski wagon.

Big FWD sedans are nice and comfy and great for a road trip.

The Avalon is just a LWB Camry, so it is an awesome car. I forget when they stopped the front bench (which was a stupid decision).

You may be able to get Bilstein shocks for the DTS, if it's the same setup as teh Impala and other GM big sedans.
